Mindful Woodcraft Weekend / May 10th – 12th

For thousands of years human beings have shaped wood to make utensils of daily life: plates, bowls, spoons etc. It is a craft that requires learning some techniques and the capacity to sustain our attention on the simple act of shaping. During the weekend we will weave together the practice of mindful meditation with the carving of a bowl. The craft can become the place of discovery if we bring to it our mindful presence. This weekend is for people of any level of meditation practice and will not assume any previous experience of wood craft. For people with some meditation experience this weekend will offer an opportunity for grounding mindfulness in daily activity. For people new to meditation, the weekend will provide a grounding in mindfulness based practice. And for all participants the aim is to have an enjoyable experience creating our bowl and also to discover how, through mindful presence, the craft can become a way for seeing and transforming the patterns of thought and feeling that we can find ourselves getting stuck in. We will discover that in letting go we can become present to the Now of each moment.  

For each meditation session Stephen will give instruction in mindfulness based practice.  And the woodcraft sessions will begin with Roger demonstrating of the techniques to be used in the session and Roger will be helping participants as the sessions progress.

To help cultivate our capacity for mindful presence we will be invited to keep silence for some parts of the weekend.

Schedule

Friday 

4.00 – 6.00 pm arrivals

6.00 – 7.00 pm Introduction to the weekend

7.00 pm Walk to the space we will use for the carving sessions and introduction to the wood and tools.

8.00 pm Dinner

Saturday

7.30 – 8.30 Meditation practice *

8.30 Breakfast (in silence)

9.30 – 12.30 Woodcraft (including instruction on technique)

12.30 – sharing our experience of the morning

1.30 – Lunch

2.30 – Free time/ rest period

4.00 – 5.00 pm meditation practice **

5.00 – 7.00 pm woodcraft session

7.00 pm – Sharing

8.00 pm – Dinner

9.30 – Meditation practice (optional)

Sunday

7.30 – 8.30 Meditation practice *

8.30 Breakfast (in silence)

9.30 – 12.30 Woodcraft (including instruction on technique)

12.30 : sharing our experience.

1.30 Lunch

  1. – 4.00 clear rooms and depart.

*we will be invited to be in silence from the morning meditation practice until the sharing session at the end of the morning.  

**likewise we will be invited to keep silence during the afternoon woodcraft session through to the sharing
